Cannot edit steps in management studio – SQL server 2008 R2

If you start sql server 2008 R2 and open or create a job step then save it then try to open any job step in any job then you will get an error.

It looks like this.

SQL Server Management studio job step error 2008 R2

This is a bug in Management studio and is apparently caused by the dts.dll not being registered.

Use RegSrv32.exe to register the dll.

If like me you are using Windows 7 then use windows explorer to go to

C:\windows\system32\

find the cmd.exe file and right-click to choose “run as administrator”

then type this in to the window
cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn

then regsrv32.exe dts.dll

hit return then restart Management studio. Might also need to restart sql, sql agent or the machine (depends on whats locked and loaded).
